VW Karmann Ghia Engine Codes

The original engine fitted to the Karmann Ghia was the 1192cc 30HP engine which was fitted in the Beetle of the era.  The only difference was the relocation of the air filter.

Due to the height of the engine lid the VW Beetle air filter was replaced by the version that was fitted into the Splitscreeen Bus and installed on the left hand side.

In 1960 the 30HP engine was replaced with the 1200cc 34HP engine and in 1965 the 40HP.  A year later in 1967 the 44HP 1500cc was installed.  With the launch of the 1302S Beetle in 1970 along came the 50Hp 1584cc (1600) engine.  This would be the final engine upgrade fitted to the Karmann Ghia until its production end in 1974.

Caburettors

The original 30HP engine fitted into the Karmann Ghia used the Solex 28 PICT-1 carburettor.  For extra power and performance the Okrasa tuning kit could be installed which included performance cylinder heads and twin carburettors.  This would supposedly raise the top speed from 118KPH to 145KPH.

With the launch of the 1300cc a single Solex 30 PICT-1 carburettor was installed and this remained the carburettor for the 1500cc engine.  With the launch of the Twin Port 1600cc engine a new larger Solex 34 PICT-3 carburettor was installed.
