Is this a direct replacement for a 69 Karmann Ghia speedometer or does the dash need to be modified or a adapter ring fitting ?

This is an aftermarket speedo with a 80mm diameter so you will need to custom fit it to install. As a direct replacement you will need to use a Smiths gauge like this one HERE.
