By installing this kit it will automatically lower the rear end of your Splitscreen Bus.
Brakes
There are 4 options that you can use as your new rear brakes
Option 1 – Beetle Rear Brakes
You can install 1968 to 1979 Beetle rear brakes straight onto the Beetle axles but note that the stud pattern would be 4×130 PCD (4 Stud) so adapters would be required to install your Splitscreen Bus wheels which are 5×205 PCD (Wide 5). You can install Pre 1967 Beetle Brake Drums which are 5×205 PCD (Wide 5) but you will require spacers on the axles which are available from Cool Air. Cool Air also sell a modified rear brake drum which will fit straight onto the axle without spacers and is 5×205 PCD (Wide 5). Please contact us for more details.
Option 2 – Type 3 Rear Brake Drums
You can install Type 3 5x205PCD (Wide 5) rear brake drums straight onto the Beetle Axles
Option 3 – CSP Disc Brake Conversion
Cool Air Sells a tailor made Rear Disc Brake Conversion that is designed to fit a Splitscreen bus with a Straight Axle Conversion. Please Note however that your original Splitscreen bus Steel wheels can not be used with this kit. Most Alloy wheels however can be used. If in doubt then please contact us for advice.
Option 4 – Pre 1963 Modified Splitscreen Brake Drums
You can modify a Pre 1963 Splitscreen Bus rear brake drum in order to fit onto the Beetle Axles. The Rear lip will need machining off of the brake drum so that it slides into the Beetle rear backing plate and 3/4″ will need cutting off of the snout of the brake drum so that the rear axle nut can be installed.
PLEASE NOTE: Depending on the offset of your wheels and your rear brake set up you may be required to install rear wheel spacers in order to clear the adjustable spring plate.
