Fitment: This master cylinder is for original single circuit brake systems and for use on Left Hand Drive or Right Hand Drive models

Measurements: 19mm piston

The brake master cylinder controls the braking system of your VW.  A rod is connected to the end of the brake pedal which when pressed pushes a piston inside the master cylinder.  This piston then pushes the hydraulic brake fluid threw a series of pipes and hoses which activates each slave cylinder or brake caliper which are found on each wheel.

A single circuit brake system has a single pipe attached to the master cylinder which activates all 4 brakes with the same fluid.  On later models VW introduced a dual circuit system.  This dual circuit system uses two separate sets of brake pipes on two different circuits.  One circuit controls the back brakes and one circuit controls the front brakes.

This dual circuit system was designed with saftey in mind so that in the event of a single brake circuit failure there was still one circuit active to stop the car.

Tips: If you are changing you master cylinder, some or all of the brake pipes may need to be re-routed. This is due to the port layout being different on the new master cylinder. When planning your brake line routing, be sure to fit the brake switch `below` the master cylinder centre line. Otherwise air can be trapped in the system which will make it difficult to bleed the brakes.

It is also VERY important that the end play of the brake pedal pushrod is adjusted correctly. Follow the factory specifications of 1mm endplay. The pushrod can be adjusted using the thread and lock-nut on the pushrod shaft. For some applications you may have to cut the pushrod down in length.
